AHMEDABAD: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has tested positive for swine flu. The confirmation of the test carried out on Thursday was announced by the state government on Friday morning, sending a wave of panic among a group of top industrialists who accompanied him on a recent visit to Moscow.
The whole Gujarat cabinet is also now being tested for the disease as the ministers were with the chief minister in a three-hour cabinet meeting on Thursday after his blood samples were taken.
One minister said: "He should not have taken the meeting if he was being suspected of having swine flu. He could have waited for the results of the test."
Reports about Modi having swine flu had started trickling in on Thursday evening. However, the government had refused to confirm it. Once the first test gave a positive result, another confirmatory test was carried out late on Thursday.
The government has earlier tried to hide his identity and the sample was labelled with a different name- "Ramesh".
Modi, who returned on Wednesday, will be kept in isolation for seven days at his residence, where a team of doctors are attending on him.
All his public functions have been cancelled.

RAJASTHAN NEWS | FIRE AT INDIAN OIL FUEL DEPOT | 5 KILLED | 150 INJURED
2009-10-29
A massive fire broke out at Indian Oil Coporation's fuel depot in Sitapura industrial area in the outskirts of the city tonight killing five persons and injuring 150, police said.
State officials said the help of the Army was sought to help douse the fire at the depot which is on the highway near the airport.
"The fire is massive. We are finding it difficult to douse it," Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said tonight three hours after the fire spread to adjacent depots. The fire broke out at around 7.30 PM and it may be several hours before it is completely brought under control. Deora said he is leaving for Jaipur on Friday.
Dr Ashok Pangudia, Medical Superintendent at SMS hospital, said two persons were brought dead at the hospital while one person was reported to have died in a private hospital. Some of the injured had splinter injuries, he said.
Huge flames shot into the air amid billowing smoke as hundreds of people in the villages in and around the depot panicked and fled from their homes. The fire also spread to some industrial units in a radius of three km destroying them.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the assistance of Army is being sought to help douse the fire. Some Army
jawans joined the rescue operations.
The injured were rushed to Mahatma Gandhi and SMS hospitals. Some of them had serious burn injuries.
The fire broke out when petrol was being transferred from the fuel depot to a pipeline. A leak in the pipeline is suspected to have caused the blaze.
IOC Chairman Sarthak Behuria told PTI that the fire broke out at a petrol storage tank and quickly spread to other tanks. Police said several explosions were heard.

RIL Q2 2010 RESULTS | DOWN BY 6.4% YEAR TO YEAR
RIL has announced its second quarter FY10 results. Its net profit went down 6.55% to Rs 3,852 crore versus Rs 4,122 crore on year-on-year basis (YoY).
Net sales increased 4.6% to Rs 46,848 crore as against Rs 44,787 crore, (YoY).
=======================================================
RIL Q2 2010 RESULTS
=======================================================
Numbers were excluding treasury stake sale.
Topline as well bottomline numbers were below the street expectations. CNBC-TV18 was expecting net profit at Rs 4,081 crore and net sales at Rs 49,190 crore.
GRM (gross refining margin) came in at $ 6/bbl for the quarter ended September 2009 and for half yearly, it was at $ 6.3/bbl.
Petchem margin came in at 16.45%, refining margin at 3.4% and oil & gas margin at 41.7%.
Depreciation cost for the company jumped 92.4% to Rs 2,432 crore.
For the first six months of FY10, RIL's standalone net sales slipped 9.65% to Rs 78,035 crore versus Rs 86,366 crore and net profit declined 8.7% to Rs 7,518 crore as against Rs 8,232 crore (YoY). Earning per share stood at Rs 45.80.
The net profit of oil-to-petrochemicals major Reliance Industries (RIL) dropped 6.41 percent to Rs.3,852 crore (approximately $815 million) for the quarter ended Sep 30, compared to the Rs.4,116 crore it netted in the corresponding period last fiscal.
The fall in profit, which was in line with analysts' prediction, was due to lower refining margins and were partially offset by the gas production from the D6 block in the Krishna-GOdavari basin.
In a regulatory statement Thursday, the company said it registered a turnover of Rs.48,843 crore (about $10.33 billion), an increase of 6.1 percent from the Rs.46,014 crore it earned in the year-ago period.
'The timely completion of the new SEZ refinery and the deepwater, oil and gas from KG D6 block and their safe and stable ramp-up are noteworthy accomplishment for the company,' said Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani.
'These projects have contributed meaningfully in RIL achieving a record level of profits despite the challenging business and economic environment,' Ambani said in a statement.
The revenues from the petrochemicals business dropped to Rs.13,340 crore in the quarter under review, from Rs.15,548 crore earned in the previous corresponding quarter.
The gross refining margin (GRM) for the six months ended Sep 30 was $6.3 per billion barrels, as against $14.4 per billion barrels in the first half last fiscal.
Decrease in prices accounted for 45.2 percent reduction in revenues, partially offset by higher volumes that accounted for 36.5 percent growth in income.
The earnings per share also saw a dip to Rs.23.4 from Rs.27.
The Reliance scrip ended 1.56 percent down at Rs.2,003.85 Thursday on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The results were announced after the markets closed.

UMPIRE DAVID SHEPHERD IS NO MORE

David Shepherd, who has died aged 68, was the doyen of English cricket umpires, known across the world as one of the best and fairest officials in the game; players, fans and pundits all warmed to his jolly Santa Claus figure and his quirky sense of humour, most famously expressed in his superstitious habit of standing on one leg whenever the score reached 111.
David Shepherd, one of cricket's most genial and best-loved umpires, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 68 and leaves a long-time partner, Jenny, who he married last year.
Shepherd stood in 92 Tests between 1983 and 2005 and 172 ODIs, including three consecutive World Cup finals, advancing England's reputation, with Dickie Bird, for producing the finest umpires in the world. He was a romantic, sentimental man, especially when it came to cricket, and resented what he saw as examples of greed creeping into the modern game.
"I'm very sad and shocked it's happened," said Bird. "He was a fine umpire. We umpired together all over the world. He was a character, a great man, and a tremendous bloke. I've lost a friend. A great friend."
Born in December 1940 in Bideford, Shepherd was educated at Barnstaple Grammar and St Luke's College, Exeter, and his love for Devon never wavered. He lived in the North Devon coastal village of Instow and for many years supplemented what for the most part were meagre umpiring earnings by helping his brother run a small sub-post office.
Shepherd began his cricketing life as a rotund middle-order batsman for Gloucestershire, playing from 1964‑79, starting his county career in his mid-20s after a short period playing for Devon and working as a teacher. He played 282 first-class matches and made a hundred on debut. A modest average — a touch under 25 in the first-class game, and a little over 20 in 183 one-dayers — does not tell of his enduring popularity in the West Country.
"As an umpire he has always been a familiar and much-loved face, not only here but at cricket grounds around the world," said Gloucestershire's chairman John Light. "He was friendly, outgoing and straightforward. He believed cricket was a simple game and he took a straightforward approach to it in his cricket and his umpiring. He always put a smile on your face."
Shepherd was appointed as a first-class umpire in 1981, and within two years had graduated to the Test panel where his portly, ruddy features became instantly recognisable. He became well known for standing on one leg whenever the score reached 111 or a multiple of it — a harmless little routine, in response to cricket's superstition that 111 is an unlucky number — but it was the quality of his umpiring, immense fair-mindedness and good man-management skills that endeared him to the cricketing fraternity.
His lowest moment came in 2001 during a Test between England and Pakistan at Old Trafford. Saqlain Mushtaq's off-spin won the Test for Pakistan and Shepherd failed to spot that three of his four victims were dismissed by no balls. He briefly considered early retirement. "I'd like to block out the memory of that final day for ever,'' he later wrote in his autobiography.
'Shep', as he was universally known, was awarded an MBE in 1987 and made an honorary life member of MCC in 2006. In his later years he also became president of Devon, the Minor County club.
His last Test was between West Indies and Pakistan at Kingston in June 2005 and his final appearance in an ODI came at The Oval in July of that year. As retirement beckoned, he was praised wherever he went. He turned down the offer of a farewell Test at Lord's believing that the ICC should maintain its policy of neutral umpires, and in any case he didn't really need any fuss.

PV NARASIMHA RAO ELEVATED EXPRESS WAY | LONGEST HIGHWAY IN INDIA | OPENS TODAY (19TH OCTOBER 2009) AT 4.00 PM BY ROSAIAH
2009-10-19
The 11.66-km-long P V Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway Corridor in Hyderabad is claimed to be the longest flyover in India.
It starts from SD Eye Hospital at Mehdipatnam (a major suburb in Hyderabad) to Aram Ghar Crossroads at Shivrampally, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 493 crore (Rs 4.93 billion).
Named after former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, it is likely to be inaugurated soon.
The construction of the four-lane flyover was a joint venture between Simplex Infrastructure and Somdatt Constructions.
Overseen by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, the flyover connects the heart of the city to the new international airport at Samshabad.
Image: The 11.66-km-long P V Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway Corridor is the country's longest flyover.
No entry for two wheelers, autos, goods vehicles
HYDERABAD: The maximum speed limit on the P.V. Expressway, which will be thrown open for airport bound vehicular traffic on Monday, is 60 km/hour for light motor vehicles.
As the carriageway of the expressway narrows down from two lanes (7.5 metres width) to one-and-half lane (6 metres width) at Laxminagar, Upparpally and Shivrampally, the maximum speed at these turnings has been restricted to 40 km/hour.
Overtaking at these narrow carriageways along with parking on the flyover has been strictly prohibited, said City Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao here on Sunday.
Entry for cyclists, two and three-wheelers, three and four-wheeled seven seaters, pushcarts and bullock carts are prohibited on the flyover. All the goods vehicles, including light, medium and heavy vehicles, will also be not allowed.
The restrictions come into force from October 19, Mr. Rao said. He suggested drivers to take note of the sign boards installed on the flyover with regard to the speed limits, curves, narrow gaps and other safety aspects.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner S. Prabhakar Reddy said gaps between the medians are provided at Laxminagar, Hyderguda and Shivarampally to handle emergency situations.
In case of accidents or emergency assistance, commuters can dial 100 or police officials numbers displayed on separate boards put up along with sign boards.
