Almost exactly a year after the PowerShot G7 was announced Canon has launched its successor, the PowerShot G9 digital camera. Key changes include the much-requested inclusion of a raw shooting mode, a bright new 3.0-inch screen and a new 12.1MP 1/1.7-inch sensor. The face detection, focus and handling have also been improved (the latter through a redesign of the grip and the addition of a small thumb grip) and the G9 is now compatible with Canon's ST-E2 wireless flash transmitter. One thing we have all asked for has now returned; RAW capture. The 6x optically-stabilized zoom remains the same.
Canon today launches its new flagship compact for advanced photographers – the 12.1 Megapixel PowerShot G9. The successor to the PowerShot G7 – recently named EISA European Advanced Compact Camera 2007-2008 – the PowerShot G9 incorporates improvements driven by market feedback with a range of user-oriented enhancements, including RAW image capture* and a redesigned grip and thumb rest for improved handling. Other advancements include a high resolution 3.0” PureColor LCD II, enhanced Face Detection Technology and Red-Eye Correction in playback². A wide range of accessories – including optional lenses and Speedlite flash units – now also features Canon’s Speedlite ST-E2 wireless flash transmitter.

6x optical zoom with optical Image Stabilizer
Optical Image Stabilizer technology counteracts the effect of camera shake, allowing slower shutter speeds in low-light. The 6x optical zoom affords framing flexibility with pin-sharp clarity and reduced ghosting thanks to Canon’s exclusive SR coating.
RAW image recording
RAW mode records images exactly as they are captured by the sensor - with no processing and no compression. RAW Image Task software then gives you total control over image settings and parameters for post-shoot editing. Simultaneous RAW and JPEG recording is also an option for maximum convenience and flexibility.
DIGIC III with advanced Noise Reduction
The DIGIC III processor delivers high-speed performance, superior colour rendition and cleaner images at high ISO speeds. iSAPS technology uses shooting scene data to optimise camera settings before a shot is taken.
Face Detection AF/AE/FE
Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically setting optimum focus, exposure and flash. Face Select and Track lets you choose your primary subject from up to 35 identified faces. Red-Eye Correction in playback keeps eyes looking natural.
9-point AiAF and FlexiZone AF/AE
Enjoy greater versatility with a choice of focusing options. Switch between manual focus, rapid 9-point AiAF or FlexiZone AF/AE to manually select a specific auto-focus point.
Huge 3.0" LCD screen
The 3.0" high-resolution PureColor LCD II features a scratch-resistant, low-reflection coating to handle sunny conditions and enhance colour reproduction. A wide viewing angle with high contrast improves your view from every angle.
ISO 1600 and Auto ISO Shift
ISO 1600 combines with optical Image Stabilizer to counteract image blur. A dedicated ISO dial allows quick selection of ISO settings, while Auto ISO Shift automatically increases ISO to further reduce the risk of blurring.
Shooting Modes
25 shooting modes range from automatic to full manual control, including two custom settings. Apply in-camera colour effects during or after shooting with My Colors.
